NFL Expert Picks: Vikings Favored at Jaguars as 3-Game Road Trip Begins

On Sunday, the Vikings (6-2) are visiting the Jaguars (2-7) to open a stretch of three consecutive road games for the first time since 2017 and 11th time in franchise history.

Three roadies in a row has been rare for Minnesota, especially in recent years. Prior to 2017 (at Detroit, Atlanta and Carolina), the previous occurrence was 1989 when a prospective ownership group Touchdown Jacksonville! was organized in hopes of bringing an NFL franchise to the city. The Jaguars – as well as the Panthers – played their first NFL season as an organization six years later.

After this Week 10 matchup, Minnesota will travel to Tennessee to face the Titans (2-6) before wrapping up with a visit to the Windy City on Nov. 24 to battle the Bears (4-4).

The other seasons were 1963, 1965, 1972-1973, 1978, 1980, 1983 and 1985. The Vikings are also the third of four teams this year to have a three-game road stretch, with the Bills (7-2) and Browns (2-7) each completing it in Weeks 4-6. Chicago will begin its turn on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit.

Additionally, including this past Sunday's game against Indianapolis, Minnesota's games against Jacksonville and Tennessee will mark just the sixth time in team history where the Vikings face three or more AFC teams consecutively. The other five instances were:

– 1987 (vs. Denver, at Seattle, vs. Los Angeles Raiders in Weeks 6-8)

– 1996 (vs. Kansas City, at Seattle, at Oakland, vs. Denver in Weeks 10-13)

– 1998 (at Baltimore, vs. Jacksonville, at Tennessee in Weeks 15-17)

– 2015 (vs. San Diego Chargers, at Denver, vs. Kansas City in Weeks 3-6; Minnesota had a bye in Week 5)

– 2020 (at Indianapolis, vs. Tennessee, at Houston in Weeks 2-4)

The Vikings and Jaguars have met only seven times in their history, with Minnesota holding a 6-1 record in the all-time series. Minnesota scored 50 points in its inaugural meeting (50-10 victory in 1998) with Jacksonville and has claimed the past five matchups, including the most recent in 2020 (27-24 win in OT). The Vikings won both of their road games in Jacksonville (30-12 in 2008 and 25-16 in 2016), while the Jaguars lone win in the series came in 2001, a 33-3 victory in Minnesota.

Let's see who the experts are picking to win the game:

Vikings 31, Jaguars 23 – Pete Prisco, CBS Sports

The Jaguars have lost a lot of close games, but they have a lot of injury issues right now. The Minnesota offense should have a good day here as the Jacksonville defense is last in the league in pass defense. Justin Jefferson will light them up. Vikings take it.

Vikings 31, Jaguars 24 – Staff, Bleacher Report

The Minnesota Vikings finally have their full arsenal of pass-catchers. Last week, tight end T.J. Hockenson made his season debut coming off a torn ACL, hauling in three passes for 27 yards.

The Vikings should be overwhelming favorites against a beat-up Jacksonville Jaguars squad at the bottom of the AFC standings. Running backs Travis Etienne, Jr. (hamstring) and Tank Bigsby (ankle) are playing through injuries. Wide receiver Christian Kirk is out for the season with a broken collarbone. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is dealing with a shoulder injury that is clouding his status for Sunday's game.

The Jaguars showed some fight and nearly pulled off a comeback victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last week, but our crew doesn't see them keeping it close with the Vikings. [Bleacher Report NFL analyst Maurice] Moton expects Minesota's offense to pierce through Jacksonville's leaky defense.

"The Vikings reminded everyone they're still a good team with a 21-13 win over a gritty Indianapolis Colts squad on Sunday Night Football, snapping a two-game skid," Moton said. "They now get a weaker AFC South opponent in the Jaguars, who also beat the Joe Flacco-led Colts in Week 5.

"While the math with common opponents isn't that simple, the Vikings have more than enough firepower to outscore the Jaguars," Moton added. "Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Hockenson should feast on Jacksonville's 31st-ranked pass defense in a comfortable win."

Vikings 28, Jaguars 21 – Bill Bender, Sporting News

The Vikings stopped a two-game losing streak in Week 10, and Sam Darnold will look to continue his hot streak. He averages 263 yards with six TDs and three interceptions in his past three games. He might make a mistake or two on the road against the Jaguars, but this team continues to make too many mistakes. Jacksonville is 1-4 S/U when they have at least two turnovers, and Minnesota should be able to force a few miscues on the road.

Vikings 30, Jaguars 20 – Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News

This is a terrible spot for Jacksonville. Minnesota's pass rush will be fearless in getting after Trevor Lawrence, as the Jaguars won't run enough or well enough early and are down a key weapon in Christian Kirk. The Vikings should have no trouble getting Justin Jefferson to explode downfield for Sam Darnold, but this is a game to also get Kevin O'Connell's supporting pass-catchers to go off, too.
