Brian Flores enters his third season with the Minnesota Vikings as defensive coordinator in 2025, bringing more than two decades of NFL experience to Head Coach Kevin O'Connell's staff. Flores spent the 2022 season as the senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the Vikings coaching staff on Feb. 6, 2023.
In Flores' first two seasons leading Minnesota's defense (2023-24), the Vikings have totaled 53 defensive takeaways, the third most in the NFL during the span, trailing only Buffalo (59) and Pittsburgh (57). Minnesota has also limited its opponents to an average of 96.1 rushing yards per game since Flores took ownership of the Vikings defense, the third-fewest rushing yards per game over the past two seasons, behind only Detroit (93.6) and Baltimore (94.7).
Flores, who was a 2024 finalist for The Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year, helped the Vikings to a 14-3 regular-season record and playoff appearance in 2024, the second-most wins in team history. The team's nine game win streak from Week 9 to Week 17 tied the third-longest win streak in club history. Minnesota boasted a 9-1 record in one-possession games in 2024, the second-best mark league wide trailing only the AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs (11-0).
Despite having 14 defenders on the active roster who were in their first season with Minnesota in 2024, the Vikings led the NFL in interceptions (24), passes defensed (95), opponent 4th-down conversion percentage (37.1%) and interceptions per attempt (3.8%) and tied for the league lead in takeaways (33). They also ranked second in the NFL in opponent scoring efficiency (31.6%), opponent runs of at least 20 yards (five) and opponents rushing yards per game (93.5). Minnesota was one of two teams (Houston) with at least five defensive players with 11+ starts in their first season with a team in 2024 (excluding rookies).
Flores' defense recorded a takeaway in every regular season game in 2024, marking the most consecutive games with a takeaway in a single season in franchise history, and they were the only team in the NFL with a takeaway in every game. The Vikings 24 interceptions were five more than any other team in the league (Houston, 19 interceptions) and tied for the team's second-most interceptions in a season since 2000 (28 INTs in 2003 and 24 INTs in 2005).
Under Flores' guidance, three Vikings defenders were selected to the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl in OLBs Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel and CB Byron Murphy Jr., all of whom earned the nod for the first time in their careers. Greenard (12 sacks) and Van Ginkel (11.5) finished tied for fifth and tied for eighth in sacks, respectively. They were the only duo league wide to each have at least 11.5 sacks on the season. Murphy recorded six interceptions in 2024, tied for the third most in the NFL, and become the first Vikings CB to record at least six interceptions in a season since Jimmy Hitchcock in 1998 (seven INTs). Van Ginkel was also named to The AP All-Pro Second Team.
In his first season in Minnesota, Flores helped the Vikings defense improve from 31st overall in 2022 to 16th in 2023, including posting top eight rankings in both rushing yards per play (fourth) and rushing yards per game (eighth). The Vikings led the NFL in forced fumbles with 21, three more than any other team in the league, and it marked the most forced fumbles in a single season in franchise history since 2007 when the team also forced 21.
Under Flores' direction, OLB Danielle Hunter was voted to his fourth career Pro Bowl and first as a starter in 2024. Hunter, who started every game for the Vikings in 2023, tied for the NFL lead in tackles for loss, recording 23 (Maxx Crosby). He finished fifth in the league in sacks with 16.5, which marked a single-season career high, and his four forced fumbles tied for the fifth-most league wide. Hunter was the only player in the league in 2023 to record at least 22 TFLs and 16 sacks.
In addition to Hunter, who was tabbed NFC Defensive Player of the Month in October, a trio of Vikings earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week accolades during Flores' inaugural season in Minnesota - LB Jordan Hicks (Week 6, at Chicago), S Camryn Bynum (Week 7, vs. San Francisco) and LB Ivan Pace, Jr., (Week 14, at Las Vegas), who led all rookies in tackles (102). The Vikings three Defensive Player of the Week honors were the most among all teams league wide during the 2023 season.
In one season with Pittsburgh, Flores led a defense that gave up just seven rushing touchdowns, which tied with New England for the fewest allowed in the NFL in 2022. Pittsburgh's opponents also had the league's sixth-lowest completion percentage (61.3%). Under Flores' guidance, linebacker Alex Highsmith tallied a career-high 14.5 sacks, the sixth-most in the NFL, and tied for the league lead with five forced fumbles. Flores was instrumental in helping All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt record 39 tackles, 5.5 sacks and five passes defensed in only 10 games played, leading him to his fifth-consecutive Pro Bowl selection. With Watt in the lineup in 2022, Pittsburgh posted an 8-2 record, allowed only 16.9 points per game, and registered 32 sacks and 18 takeaways.
Prior to his time with Pittsburgh, Flores served as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2019-21. Flores helped the Dolphins post back-to-back winning seasons (2020-21) for the first time since 2002-03. In 2021, Miami became the first team in NFL history to snap a seven-game losing streak with a seven-game winning streak. Flores led the Dolphins to a 10-6 record in 2020, marking only the second time the franchise has won 10 games in a season over the past decade. Miami's defense finished sixth in the NFL that season, allowing 21.1 points per game and led the league with 29 takeaways. Cornerback Xavien Howard led the league with 10 interceptions and earned AP First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
Flores got his start in the NFL with the New England Patriots, coaching in all three phases of the game – offense, defense and special teams – and helped the franchise win four Super Bowls – XXXIX, XLIX, LI and LIII. He spent eight seasons (2011-18) coaching defense and seven (2012-18) as a position coach. The Patriots advanced to the AFC Championship game in all seven seasons with Flores as a position coach and won three of the club's four Super Bowl appearances.
In 2018, Flores helped New England win Super Bowl LIII in his first season as the defensive play-caller. Under his direction, the defense went from 17th to seventh in the league in passer rating, holding opponents to a 85.4 rating. New England was tied for fifth in the NFL with 28 takeaways and tied for third with 18 interceptions on the season, improving from 25th and 18th in those categories, respectively, in 2017.
Flores spent three seasons (2016-18) as the Patriots linebackers coach. In his first season in the role in 2016, New England had the NFL's best scoring defense, only allowing 15.6 points per game. As a safeties coach from 2012-15, Flores helped safety Devin McCourty earn AP Second Team All-Pro honors in 2013. Flores joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant in 2004 and was promoted to pro scout in 2006. He then moved into coaching as a coaching assistant from 2008-09, where he crossed paths with O'Connell, who played quarterback for the club in 2008.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native graduated from Boston College, where he played linebacker for four years, with a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in administrative studies. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons, Miles and Max, and a daughter, Liliana.
