EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings know their postseason goal has previously been accomplished before because several of them played key roles in the 2021 Rams advancing from a Wild Card participant to Super Bowl Champion.
A couple of elements were different for the Rams than the Vikings. L.A. was the No. 4 seed and opened the postseason by hosting the No. 5 seed Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football.
This time around, former Rams assistants, including Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell and Offensive Coordinator Wes Phillips, and players who have traded one set of helmet horns for another — and blue for purple — are the No. 5 seed and the road team.
Fires in Los Angeles, however, have prompted a relocation to the home of the Cardinals, as well as a collective relief effort by the Rams, Vikings, Chargers, Texans and NFL.
Tickets for Monday night's Wild Card game in Arizona are now available to the general public.
O'Connell and Phillips were asked about the run with the Rams that preceded their hires in Minnesota.
"I remember we didn't get the result we wanted in that last game [of the regular season], and we were able to, in many ways, do what we're attempting to do this week from a standpoint of acknowledging how it happened, acknowledging how we need to improve," O'Connell said. "The late-season improvement, sometimes, is just about consistency. It's about doing some of the things that you think back over the season we did really well, we've got to make sure we find a way to do a lot of those things in a single elimination tournament to give yourself the best chance to win a game.
"Then it's about momentum from there," O'Connell continued. "In a game, in a quarter, starting the game the way you want to start, responding to adversity, a lot of the things that we've had to do all season long, you're just going to need to extract all that and put it into one game and make sure that your team is ready to go. From there, there's 1,000 little things that go on in the game. I've told you guys before, I can think back to seven to 10 plays throughout the course of that run, where if one of those goes differently, who knows."
Phillips admitted the successful run through the playoffs brought back a memory, but he emphasized first things first.
"We're taking this one game at a time, but if we did end up seeing Detroit again at some point, we had to beat San Francisco, who had beaten us twice that year and in my tenure there had beat us six straight times," Phillips said, "so we really didn't have the right formula, the right answer [against the 49ers] and were able to put together a good plan for the NFC Championship Game and able to get that win.
"I've always felt like the teams that make it to the Super Bowl, the ball's got to bounce your way a couple of times, your best players have got to play great at the big moments in the game, and you kind of see that throughout the league," Phillips added. "I felt that way when my dad was part of a Super Bowl team. I just felt like their best players made big plays in the moments they needed, and we've got some really good players and trust those guys to compete. We'll see how it goes."
Receiver and punt returner Brandon Powell signed with L.A.'s practice squad in November. After the Rams lost all three games that month (and had their bye) to fall to 7-4, the squad won five games before falling in the season finale and ending at 12-5.
"We went on a losing streak in November. Everybody thought it was over, but we fixed the little mistakes," Powell said. "Everybody just came out to do their job and played football, and after a while, you realized we were in the Super Bowl. That's how it was for me, you just took it as another game and eventually you ended up winning the Super Bowl. That's all it was."
Powell said Minnesota's results despite preseason doubters have provided confidence this team is capable of doing what he helped his former team accomplish.
"I'll just say, just look at our season. Nobody thought the Minnesota Vikings were gonna be 14-3 and in the playoffs," Powell said. "This whole season just shows that we're a great team and all we gotta do is just come out and play and we can play with anybody."
