EAGAN, Minn. — The last time the Vikings hosted the Colts (a Saturday in December 2022), the greatest comeback in NFL history unfolded after halftime (33 points in a 39-36 overtime win by Minnesota).
Even though it has only been two seasons, the rosters for both teams are already quite different. Justin Jefferson and C.J. Ham are the only remaining Vikings who scored two of the five touchdowns to fulfill former cornerback Patrick Peterson's legendary locker room request.
Jefferson's 8-yard scoring reception occurred against current teammate Stephon Gilmore. The phenom receiver was asked if he had brought up the game after Gilmore joined Minnesota (5-2) in August.
"I've never brought it up. If anything, I'll bring it up as some fuel and motivation for him to go out and get this 'dub' on our side," Jefferson said Thursday. "But I mean just that matchup alone during that game, and just those circumstances, it definitely was an exciting matchup, especially with all that was going on. You know, we're two competitors that love the game of football, so I enjoyed that matchup, and I'm excited that he's on our side now."
Jefferson recalled the "slow start" by the Vikings, who clinched the NFC North that day with the comeback victory.
"Being down by 33 points is never a good position to be in, especially in the NFL. I mean, it's flat out embarrassing, to be honest," Jefferson said. "So just going into the locker room and the leaders of the team just kind of said a couple words, and all we had to do at that moment was just go out there and play. I mean, being down 33 is not something that you can really dial up a plan to come back on.
"It was just all about, you know, what did everybody want to do? Did we want to come back, or did we just want to bow our heads and just look on toward [the] next week? But we locked in and were all focused on coming back and winning that game, which we did. It was definitely a crazy experience, just being there and getting that victory," Jefferson said.
The Vikings want to return to the win column after dropping their past two games and prefer not to have to replicate that kind of comeback against the Colts (4-4).
