ESPN gave Justin Jefferson his flowers, again.
The media outlet on Monday ranked Jefferson the best non-quarterback and No. 3 player overall in its ranking that's designed to predict the Top 100 players for the season. The Vikings receiver checked in at No. 2 in 2023.
Jefferson is bookended by Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes (No. 1) and Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson (No. 2), and Cleveland edge defender Myles Garrett (No. 4) and Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen (No. 5).
Kevin Seifert, who covers the Vikings for ESPN, said this on Jefferson: Fresh off a $140 million contract extension that made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL, Jefferson has reached a bit of a career crossroads. He has hit his prime just as the Vikings have moved on from quarterback Kirk Cousins, the passer who threw 354 of his 392 career receptions.
Jefferson is one of three wide receivers squeezed into the top 10, along with college teammate and Cincinnati star Ja'Marr Chase (No. 6) and dangerously fast Dolphins pass-catcher Tyreek Hill (No. 8). CeeDee Lamb of the Cowboys, at No. 11, is the only other wideout forecasted in the first 20 spots.
Nineteen receivers in total were designated as Top 100 players.
Last year, Jefferson appeared in a career-low 10 games but managed a career-high 107.4 receiving yards per contest. His career average of 98.3 yards is tops in NFL history among players with at least 50 games.
Seifert projects Jefferson to have 106 receptions for 1,355 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
Two other Vikings joined Jefferson, aka Jets, on the countdown – left tackle Christian Darrisaw and tight end T.J. Hockenson, the former at No. 97 and the latter, still recovering from an ACL injury, at No. 79.
Seifert notes that Darrisaw's bid to be a first-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl honoree seems more likely after he was awarded a $113 million contract extension this offseason. Darrisaw staying healthy is the key.
Seifert wrote: He has the movement skills to block in space on screens and quick passes and also rarely needs help from tight ends or backs when he is in-line blocking. The only question on his future is injuries, which have cost him 10 games in three seasons. … Darrisaw has had the best run block win rate (77%) out of the Vikings offensive linemen in the past two seasons with a minimum of 10 starts.
Darrisaw was not named on last year's ranking. Nor was Hockenson.
Regarding Hockenson, Seifert outlines the two-time Pro Bowl tight end's 95 catches a year ago (a career best in his first full season in Head Coach Kevin O'Connell's system) and imagines similar chances when he rejoins the fray. Hockenson is the fifth of five tight ends included in the ranking, by the way.
As for preseason NFC North bragging rights, Detroit leads the division with six top-100 representatives, while Chicago matches Minnesota's three and Green Bay is the low club on the totem pole, with two.
Danielle Hunter (No. 39) and Kirk Cousins (No. 87) are former Vikings players mentioned in the article.
