3 Observations: A Day for Vikings Defensive Backs and Justin Jefferson

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings popped pads again Wednesday as they continued their trek through training camp.

Another sell-out crowd provided high levels of energy as Minnesota worked through multiple scenarios.

Aaron Jones, Sr., and Jonathan Greenard did not practice, but Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw were back in action after not participating Tuesday.

Lewis Cine entered the mix during team periods after returning to position drills on Tuesday.

Shaq Griffin, Malik Knowles, Gabriel Murphy, Jeremy Flax, Dalton Risner, Robert Tonyan, Jerry Tillery and Sammis Reyes also did not practice. Tillery is recovering from getting cleated Saturday during a drill, which caused a laceration on his lower calf.

The Vikings are scheduled to practice again Thursday in a session that is open to the public before going through game prep ahead of Saturday's preseason opener at U.S. Bank Stadium. Kickoff between the Vikings and Raiders is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CT)

Here are three observations presented by Minnesota Eye Consultants, the Proud LASIK Partner of the Minnesota Vikings:

1. A Day for Defensive Backs

Multiple Vikings defensive backs made impressive plays on the day.

Joshua Metellus struck for an interception during a team drill, stepping in front of a pass thrown by Nick Mullens.

Metellus also had a nice breakup of a Sam Darnold pass intended for Johnny Mundt on a third-and-6 during a move-the-ball period.

Darnold and Mundt were later successful in the red zone, despite solid coverage again by Metellus.

Undrafted rookie Dwight McGlothern, Akayleb Evans, Bobby McCain and A.J. Green III each wound up with interceptions during different parts of the practice. McCain added a pass breakup on a pass from J.J. McCarthy to Trent Sherfield, Sr., to deny a conversion on third-and-5.

Green made a claim for best catch of the day by going up and one-handing the ball during a 1-on-1 matchup against Jefferson.

The player with the next most dazzling catch of the day was receiver Thayer Thomas, who also one-handed a deep pass early in the session.

2. Jefferson dazzles again

This just in, Jefferson is elite.

OK, you already knew that.

But a particularly impressive part of camp is how consistently the All-Pro receiver and Darnold have been connecting on a variety of routes.

It's been just two months since the duo threw and caught together for the first time (during mandatory minicamp), but their rhythm is more like that of longstanding bandmates.

Along the sideline, over the middle, short routes, intermediate and deep, they have consistently made plays.

And Wednesday included a couple that occurred against some solid coverage by Byron Murphy, Jr.

Darnold hit Jefferson on the right sideline on a timing route against Murphy and latter zipped one down the left sideline beyond Murphy's grasp.

Darnold also scrambled and found Jefferson for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal at the 5.

3. More scenarios

The Vikings often spend considerable practice time in the red zone. Wednesday was no exception for that, but the session also included plenty of work on third downs.

Darnold completed passes to Jordan Addison and Jefferson to convert a third-and-3 and a third-and-9, respectively.

McCarthy completed a pass on third-and-3 to Jalen Nailor, but the pocket collapsed on a third-and-6, forcing a pass that was nearly picked off. He nearly connected with Sherfield on third-and-9, but McGlothern broke it up.

Minnesota also worked through the end-of-game mayday scenario in which the team must hustle the kicking group onto the field for a last-second field goal attempt. The Vikings went through the operation but did not have Will Reichard attempt the kicks.
