Vikings vs. Cardinals Game Observations: Clutch in Crunch Time of 23-22 Win

MINNEAPOLIS — The Vikings offense found one more scoring drive, and the defense delivered one final stop for a 23-22 victory Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Shaq Griffin undercut a pass intended for Marvin Harison, Jr., on fourth-and-10 to intercept the football with 33 seconds remaining to fire the home venue into a frenzy and send the offense into the victory formation.

Minnesota improved to 10-2 on the season and extended its home win streak against the Cardinals franchise to 12 contests (including one postseason game).

Arizona (6-6) didn't trail until 1:13 remained in the game and appeared poised for the Cardinals first victory in the series since 1977 when the organization was still based in St. Louis.

Sam Darnold, however, led Minnesota on an impressive touchdown drive. Minnesota took over with 3:20 remaining, and Darnold opened with throws of 6 yards to Justin Jefferson and 26 to Jordan Addison to quickly move the ball to the Arizona 38.

Cam Akers added a 5-yard run, and Darnold overcame pressure on second-and-5 to play another down, as well as a pass on third-and-5 getting tipped at the line of scrimmage.

On fourth-and-5, he calmly found Jefferson for a gain of 12 just before the 2-minute warning.

Darnold's next pass to T.J. Hockenson resulted in an 8-yard pass interference penalty. The Vikings followed with a quick pass to Addison for another 8 before sending Aaron Jones, Sr., out of the backfield for a 5-yard touchdown reception — the 20th of his career and his second with Minnesota.

The Vikings defense dug deep and dialed up the pressure on the next series.

On second-and-5, Jonathan Greenard swatted the ball out of Kyler Murray's hands, resulting in a sack that lost 8. Murray scrambled for just 3 on third-and-13 before Greenard chased down the elusive and fleet-footed QB, setting up the fourth-and-10 from the 30 and heroics by Griffin.

1. Breaking through, despite offensive disparity

Entering Sunday's game, the Vikings only two losses of the season occurred when the opponent outgained them on the ground.

Arizona rushed 31 times for a whopping 154 yards that was almost double what the Vikings had allowed on the season.

The Cardinals were so committed to the run that they gained 8 on third-and-6 with 6:29 remaining. It looked like Arizona quick snapped and caught Minnesota before the Vikings defense was fully ready for the play.

That gain helped extend a 16-play drive that covered 66 yards and lasted 7:48 of the fourth quarter. Minnesota was able to upend the drive after Arizona advanced to the 5-yard line thanks to a false start penalty followed by intentional grounding on first-and-goal plays.

Arizona settled for its fifth field goal by Chad Ryland, who went 5-for-6 on the day, and a 22-16 edge with 3:20 remaining.

2. Turnovers & red zone comparison

The Vikings overcame having the ball for less than 25 minutes thanks to winning the turnover battle two to one.

Former Cardinals second-round pick Byron Murphy, Jr., intercepted Murray on the second play of the fourth quarter.

His pick gave the Vikings the ball at their 32, and Minnesota put together a drive that reached the Arizona 13 but ended with a 31-yard field goal by Parker Romo, who went 3-for-4 on field goals in his first regular-season game at U.S. Bank Stadium, highlighted by a 55-yarder.

Minnesota's resolve in the red zone was arguably the biggest difference in the game.

Despite allowing 25 first downs and 406 yards of offense, the Vikings limited the Cardinals to 1-for-6 when Arizona reached Minnesota's 20-yard line.

The Vikings overcame going just 1-for-8 on third down with the key fourth-down conversion to Jefferson and were able to go 2-for-4 on trips to the red zone.

3. Finding Jefferson

Speaking of Jefferson, he led all players with 99 receiving yards on seven catches (nine targets), despite not having a catch in the game's first 24 minutes.

Jefferson came up big time and again with the Vikings finding creative ways to get him the football. He lined up in the backfield a few times beside Darnold in the shotgun formation.

Jefferson entered Sunday's Vikings game against the Arizona Cardinals needing 61 yards to reach quad digits in Minnesota's 12th game of 2024.

He joined Pro Football Hall of Famer and Vikings Ring of Honor member Randy Moss (six seasons from 1998-2003), A.J. Green (2011-15) and Mike Evans (10 seasons from 2014-2023 so far) in reaching that milestone.

Darnold finished 21-of-31 passing for 235 yards with two touchdowns, no turnovers and a passer rating of 111.6. It was his 10th game this season with a passer rating of 100 or higher.

4. Gilmore leaves with hamstring injury

Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore left the game in the second quarter with a hamstring injury.

He was replaced by veteran Fabian Moreau, who had some good plays but also suffered a rough two-play stretch in the third quarter on Arizona's touchdown drive.

Moreau was flagged f or pass interference while tracking Zay Jones down the middle of the field, resulting in a 38-yard mark-off that moved the ball to the Minnesota 15.

Moreau was targeted on the very next play, as well, with Murray perfectly placing the ball to rookie Marvin Harrison, Jr., for a 15-yard touchdown.

Officials also chalked up a pass interference against Moreau earlier in the third quarter, ruling he made contact with Greg Dortch while trying to break up a pass on third-and-12.

That possession ended with a 40-yard field goal.
