EAGAN, Minn. – The Vikings defensive backs are welcoming a new face to the fold.

Minnesota signed veteran Bobby McCain, the team announced Monday.

Originally a fifth-round draft pick by the Dolphins in 2015, McCain has 131 games with 87 career starts under his belt.

The Alabama native most recently played for the Giants in 2023, for whom he played 10 games primarily on special teams.

McCain played 34 games (32 starts) for Washington from 2021-22 and played 2,002 defensive snaps.

Over his nine-season career thus far, he has 394 tackles, 11 interceptions, 4.0 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and 45 passes defensed.

Here are five things to know about the Vikings new defensive back:

1. Familiarity with Flores

Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores served as the Dolphins head coach from 2019-2021, overlapping with McCain in Miami in 2019 and 2020.

During an interview in 2020, Flores "spoke glowingly" of the defender's leadership, communication and tackling.

McCain has played cornerback and safety over his years; it will be interesting to see how Flores utilizes him in the Vikings defense, which recently lost CB Mekhi Blackmon for the season to a torn ACL and is without CB Shaq Griffin in the short-term due to a soft-tissue injury. The team also continues to mourn the tragic loss of CB Khyree Jackson, who was killed in a car accident July 6.

2. Former Memphis Tiger

McCain was a standout at Memphis, where he was a four-year starting cornerback for the Tigers. He wrapped his college career with 12 interceptions, including four he returned for touchdowns.

McCain's 246 interception return yards ranked second all-time in school history.

He also totaled 136 tackles, 15 passes broken up, a forced fumble and three fumbles recovered.

McCain played in the 2015 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl and received an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine.

He and recent Vikings addition Jacobi Francis both attended Memphis but did not overlap.

3. Grew up in Oxford, Alabama

McCain was born and raised in Oxford, Alabama, where he played for Head Coach John Grass at Oxford High School as a defensive back and wide receiver.

He shares an alma mater with a number of other professional athletes, including free agent linebacker Kwon Alexander, Buccaneers linebacker K.J. Britt and Browns linebacker Tae Davis.

McCain joins quarterback Nick Mullens and rookie kicker Will Reichard as Alabama natives on the Vikings roster.

4. Intercepted Brady 3x

It's an elite club to be a part of.

McCain is one of just eight NFL players to intercept future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady three times in regular-season games. He did so twice against the Patriots and once after Brady joined the Buccaneers. No one has ever picked off Brady four times.

McCain has intercepted eight different NFL QBs so far, including Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown when McCown played for the Jets.

5. Multi-sport athlete

McCain also played baseball, which he called his "first love." His favorite players were Roberto Clemente and Andrew McCutchen, and he played centerfield and catcher for Oxford High School before ultimately deciding to focus fully on football.
