Derron Montgomery enters his third season in the NFL as an offensive quality control assistant with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. He previously served as a senior offensive analyst for the University of Arizona in 2021, before entering the professional ranks.
In his second season with the Vikings in 2023, Montgomery contributed to the Vikings finishing the season in the top 10 in both total offense and passing yards per game. The team averaged 347.8 yards per game, the 10th most among all teams, and 256.4 passing yards per game, which ranked fifth in the league.
In 2022, Montgomery helped the Vikings offense finish seventh in the league in total offense (361.5) and sixth in passing yards per game (263.8). The unit averaged 22.5 first downs per game, the fourth-most in the NFL. Minnesota scored 58 points on their opening drives, the second-most in the NFL in 2022. Four offensive players were also named to the Pro Bowl – RB Dalvin Cook, QB Kirk Cousins, TE T.J. Hockenson and WR Justin Jefferson.
While with Arizona in 2021, Montgomery helped WR Stanley Berryhill III finish second in the Pac-12 in receptions (83) and fourth in receiving yards (744), ultimately earning him first-team All-Pac-12 (all-purpose) honors and an honorable mention as a wide receiver.Â
Prior to his time with the Wildcats, Montgomery spent time at Georgia as the offensive quality control coach from 2018-20. He served as an assistant head coach with Abilene Christian, working with the fullbacks and tight ends from 2016-17 after his time as the offensive coordinator for New Mexico Highlands in 2016.Â
In his time with Michigan as the wide receivers coach in 2015, he helped Michigan to a 10-3 overall record and a postseason Citrus Bowl victory over Florida. Montgomery assisted passing game coordinator Jedd Fisch in running position meetings, rotations and subs in game, and he recruited the Texas and South Florida areas. He also helped WRs Jehu Chesson and Amara Darboh both top 50 catches for more than 700 yards. Chesson was named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the coaches, and won the Bo Schembechler MVP award.
Montgomery began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at Abilene Christian from 2009-11 and then served as an intern coaching assistant for Miami (2012) before serving as the assistant wide receivers coach for Miami from 2013-14. While with Miami, he helped WR Phillip Dorsett lead the ACC in receiving touchdowns (10) and receiving yards per reception (24.2) in 2014. WR Allen Burns had a career-high 62 reception for 1,162 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2013. His 1,162 receiving yards were fourth-best in the ACC. Montgomery helped Miami to consecutive postseason bowl appearances in 2013 (Athletic Bowl) and 2014 (Independence Bowl).
Montgomery has worked briefly with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens in his career. In July 2014 and 2015, he was a training camp volunteer with the Browns, where he crossed paths with then-head coach Mike Pettine and then-quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell. From January to February 2012, he worked with the Baltimore Ravens as a postseason volunteer, where he assisted Wilbert Montgomery, his father and Ravens running backs coach, with postseason evaluation and scouting reports of NFL prospects. Wilbert Montgomery played nine seasons in the NFL, eight with the Eagles and one with the Detroit Lions, and is second all-time in Eagles rushing yards (6,538) and touchdowns (45).Â
The Garland, Texas, native played wide receiver at Iowa State from 2006-09 before his playing career ended due to an injury in 2009. He then transferred to Abilene Christian where he obtained his bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2011. Montgomery also has his master's degree in arts and liberal studies from the University of Miami.
