The 6-7 Colts are preparing this week to face the 7-6 Vikings, and both teams arevying for postseason slots.
While Minnesota has been readying itself for Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, Indianapolis is prepping for a stout Vikings defense.
Colts Offensive Coordinator Rob Chudzinski called the matchup an "outstanding challenge" against an "outstanding defense.'
"There's really no weaknesses in the group, from the front all the way back to the secondary," Chudzinski told media during his Thursday press conference. "A very strong, physical unit. They're good against the run and the pass, outstanding scheme, they're flying around to the ball, excellent secondary – all the way from the corners to their safeties.
"A lot of stars on that defense and a lot of guys playing great football right now," Chudzinski added.
Luck, who has been sacked 40 times this season, the highest percentage of his NFL career, is also aware of Minnesota's defensive weapons.
"It's certainly a formidable front, a great front seven," Luck told Twin Cities media via conference call. "A big part of the pass rush is if you can cover behind it, and they certainly do. Our offensive line is incredibly excited for the challenge. We're excited for the challenge, and we know it's going to be a big one."
Here are some highlights of what the Colts said about the Vikings this week:
Colts Defensive Coordinator Ted Monachino on Sam Bradford:
"Being the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, you know he's got great arm talent, he's got a great mind for what he's doing out there, and he knows where to go with the ball early. He doesn't hold it very often. We have to do a great job of mixing pressure and coverage to make sure that when we do have our chances to get after him, we can. But we also know that, you start taking guys out of the coverage, you're giving him more space, and that's not necessarily what you want to live in. But he's a very good player and playing at a high level."
Colts Head Coach Chuck Pagano on Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer:
"He's a straightforward, standup guy. He's a great Xs and Os guy, he knows football inside and out. He's a standup guy. He's going to tell you exactly what's on his mind, and he's always been true to himself and not tried to be anybody else. He's tough and he's hard-nosed, and I've got great respect watching him and going against him a lot of times. He's had a great career and continues to have a great career, but he's one hell of a person and one hell of a football coach and man."
Chudzinski on the Vikings defensive line:
"They're an outstanding front. You look all the way from their inside guys to their outside guys – [Everson] Griffen and the things he does, he's one of the best pass rushers in the league if not the best. [Brian] Robison inside, and everybody across – you just keep looking at 90-numbers coming off the bench and making plays."
Pagano on challenge the Vikings present:
"There's a lot of things. A great football team, have a ton of respect for Coach Zim' and that entire staff. They're well-coached in all three phases. [Defensive coordinator] George Edwards is doing a phenomenal job with the defense. [Special Teams Coordinator Mike Priefer] is as good as they get on special teams. […] They've got a bunch of players all over the place. It's an athletic, tough, disciplined football team. They play extremely hard, and that's a credit to Coach Zim' and his staff."
