Vikings Bringing Back Laquon Treadwell & Marcus Sherels

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Tuesday announced the re-signing of receiver Laquon Treadwell and return specialist/cornerback Marcus Sherels.

Minnesota also announced that receiver Chad Beebe has been placed on Injured Reserve, and linebacker Devante Downs has been waived.

Treadwell, who was selected 23rd overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, was released earlier this month during final roster reductions.

He has 56 career receptions for 517 yards and one touchdown in 40 regular-season games (15 starts).

Treadwell posted career bests of 35 receptions for 302 yards and scored his first touchdown in 2018.

When the Vikings reduced their roster to 53, they kept four receivers: starters Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, followed by reserves Beebe and rookie Bisi Johnson.

Beebe was knocked out of Sunday's game against Oakland with an ankle injury.

In between, Minnesota signed Josh Doctson, who was selected by Washington a pick ahead of Treadwell. After the Redskins released Doctson, he headed to Minnesota.

Doctson was inactive in Week 1 and suffered a hamstring injury in practice the following week. He was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 12, less than 10 days after joining the Vikings.

Sherels is the franchise leader in punt return yardage (2,447), punt return average (10.6 yards per return) and punt return touchdowns (five).

The Rochester native and former Minnesota Golden Gopher joined the Vikings as an undrafted player who earned a spot on the practice squad in 2010 after participating in a tryout. He was signed to the 53-man roster by the end of that season and made his debut against Detroit on Jan. 2, 2011.

Sherels made the team in 2011 and kept making the team each of the following seasons through 2018, no many how many times that doubt was cast on him by outsiders.

This offseason, he signed with New Orleans during free agency. He was released by the Saints earlier this month.

In addition to 231 career punt returns for 2,447 yards, Sherels has returned 53 kickoffs a total of 1,350 yards (25.5 per return).
