Originally selected by Minnesota in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Granite Bay, California, native was named USC's team MVP following his senior season in 2018. Smith led the Trojans in tackles as a sophomore, junior and senior, becoming the first USC player to do so in three consecutive seasons since Dennis Johnson did so from 1977-1979.

The Rancho Santa Margarita, California, native spent the entirety of training camp in 2018 with Minnesota after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent on May 7, 2018. Stanton attended Nebraska out of high school before transferring to Saddleback College and eventually ending his career at UNLV. A college quarterback before making the transition to fullback with the Vikings, Stanton played in 14 games with the Rebels, completing 105 passes on 195 attempts for 10 touchdowns and 77 rushing attempts for 327 yards and three touchdowns. He earned junior college All-America honors while at Saddleback and helped the team to the California Community College Football Coaches Association State Championship game.
