The Vikings are sending condolences to the family of Hubbard "Axe" Alexander, who coached Vikings receivers in 1998-99.
Alexander passed away Sunday at the age of 77.
Alexander helped guide Randy Moss through his rookie season when the first-round pick posted 69 receptions for 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns to set NFL records in all three categories for a first-year player.
Moss was part of the "Three Deep" dynamic with Hall of Famer Cris Carter (78 receptions for 1,011 yards and 12 touchdowns) and Jake Reed (34 receptions for 474 yards and four touchdowns). The receivers group helped key the Vikings 556-point season.
Alexander was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1939 and played collegiately at Tennessee State, where he later launched his coaching career as a graduate assistant.
Nearly three decades later, Alexander was Cowboys receivers coach. He worked with Vikings Offensive Coordinator Norv Turner when Dallas won Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII and with Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer when Dallas won Super Bowl XXX.
