MINNEAPOLIS — The Vikings revved up the running game and were dominant on third downs in a 27-17 win on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Latavius Murray rushed 24 times for a career-best 155 yards and a score, Kirk Cousins rushed for a 7-yard touchdown, and Mike Boone gained 20 on his only carry of the game. The Vikings were without Dalvin Cook but had a season best of 195 rushing yards against the Cardinals defense, which ranked 32nd in the NFL entering Week 6.
The Cardinals were 0-for-10 on third downs. The Vikings finished 5-for-14 and possessed the ball for 34:15.
Oh yeah, and Adam Thielen dazzled again, particularly in the third quarter when Minnesota seized control of the game and took a two-score lead.
Thielen caught 11 passes for 123 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown dart from Cousins in the third quarter for a 20-10 lead. Thielen's most important catch — a diving grab along the sidelines — also gained 13 yards and converted a third-and-13 during the possession.
Cousins finished 24 of 34 passing with 233 yards, a touchdown, an interception and a passer rating of 87.0. He also lost a fumble during a sack that Arizona's Budda Baker returned 36 yards for a touchdown.
The only score of the fourth quarter by either team was a 1-yard run by David Johnson with 6:57 left in the game.
The Vikings had just a 13-10 lead at halftime, despite outgaining the Cardinals 237 to 113 and earning 12 first downs, compared to three by Arizona.
The teams were a combined 1-for-13 on third downs. The only conversion was a 17-yard pass from Kirk Cousins to Kyle Rudolph on a third-and-3 in the final minute of the first half.
Minnesota possessed the ball for 19:34 in the first half.
Notes
Danielle Hunter extended his career-best consecutive games with a sack streak to six. Hunter added another in the second half to give him 7.0 this season.
Brian O'Neill made his first career start. O'Neill opened at right tackle, and the Vikings moved Rashod Hill to left tackle to fill in for Riley Reiff, who was out with a foot injury.
George Iloka started for the first time with the Vikings. Iloka opened in place of Andrew Sendejo, who was out with a groin injury.
Mike Hughes suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter and didn't return.
Anthony Harris recorded his first career interception.
