Vikings Awarded 2 Compensatory Picks in 2018 NFL Draft

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. –The NFL on Friday announced that the Vikings will receive a pair of sixth-round compensatory picks in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The selections will be the 213th and 218th overall.

This year will be the first time that Minnesota has been awarded a compensatory pick since 2012, when the Vikings received two fourth-round picks, which they used to draft TE Rhett Ellison and WR Greg Childs.

According to the NFL's rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks, which are positioned within the third through seventh rounds.

Compensatory free agents are determined "by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors," and not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by this formula. The Collective Bargaining Agreement limits the number of compensatory selections to 32, per the number of teams in the league.

The Vikings and Packers were the only NFC North teams to be awarded with 2018 compensatory picks.

The 2017 NFL Draft was the first in which compensatory picks could be used in trades.

The Vikings benefited from the rule change, when they received the Chiefs fifth-round compensatory pick via trade. Minnesota used the 180th overall selection to snag Miami G Danny Isidora.

Minnesota's sixth-round compensatory picks bring the Vikings current total to seven selections in the 2018 NFL Draft. In addition to the compensatory picks, the Vikings are **slated to make selections** in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth rounds. They hold the 30th overall pick in the first round.

The Vikings fourth-round pick was traded to Philadelphia as part of the Sam Bradford trade in 2016, and the team's seventh-round pick was traded to the Seahawks for CB Tramaine Brock, Sr. last September.
