EAGAN, Minn. — If you've lived in or visited Minnesota during the winter, you know it sometimes can be difficult to keep the chill at bay.
That's why 3M, headquartered in St. Paul, recently designed and created the "SKOL" Minnesota Vikings hand warmers. In addition to distributing them to the first 40,000 fans at Sunday's win over the Packers, 3M donated numerous warmers across the community to families and young people currently facing hardship.
"Supporting community events and families is very important to 3M as the official science partner of the Minnesota Vikings," 3M's Ally Fernholz said during the team's Winter Wonderland event earlier this month, where The Link youth experiencing homelessness received hand warmers. "We're excited to help everyone here stay warm this winter with these one-of-a-kind [gifts]."
Part of 3M's mission focuses on improving lives through science. The company believes that "when insulation really performs, it's never too cold." 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation makes it possible to be outside and enjoy Minnesota's cold weather.
"Using our platform for impact to better the lives of Minnesotans is critical for the Vikings organization," Vikings Vice President of Social Impact Brett Taber said. "We are honored to partner with 3M in this shared value and help these hand warmers reach those in need this winter."
Crafted from up to 78 percent post-consumer recycled material, the synthetic insulation by 3M is a light, warm, economical and sustainable solution for outerwear and sportswear. Among its unique features is that the 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation retains most of its insulating ability even under damp conditions.
3M Application Engineer Robert Polik explained the technology to those at the Winter Wonderland event, noting the hand warmers actually provide more warmth than even a heavy pair of gloves.
"When you think of insulation, you might think of your big, puffy, warm jacket," Polik said. "This is basically that, but for your hands."
Polik additionally pointed out the 3M™ Scotchlite™ reflective material used on the hand warmers to help keep individuals safe who may be strolling streets or sidewalks after dark.
"When a car's headlights shine on this reflective surface, it bounces back right at the car, and the driver will know you are there," Polik said. "We put 3M™ Thinsulate™ and 3M™ Scotchlite™ in these to help keep people warm and safe this winter, and they're an honor to give away."
