Profile

Summary: It's been quite the climb for Allen, all the way from junior college to a likely first-round pick projection in the NFL Draft. Allen began his ascension at Reedley Community College in California in 2014. He averaged 285 passing yards and 66 rushing yards per contest and threw 26 touchdown passes, garnering attention from Wyoming Head Coach Craig Bohl.

Allen suffered a clavicle injury early in his first season with the Cowboys and was awarded a redshirt. He returned for 2016 and averaged 15.3 yards per completion (sixth in FBS) and ranked 32nd in passing efficiency (144.9 rating). Those numbers fell to 11.9 yards per completion (67th) and 127.8 (72nd) in 2017.

Stats are one thing, but so is potential, and Allen has been praised for his athleticism and having the attributes of a traditional pocket passer who also has the ability and willingness to make plays with his feet.

Allen had a bit of a rocky start in the Senior Bowl, but he surprised the broadcast crew by returning to action in the second half. He went 2-for-6 for 14 yards and took a sack in the first half but bounced back to go 4-of-4 passing for 52 yards on a drive that included a 16-yard touchdown pass to open the third quarter.

Stacking up:NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock ranked Allen as the second-best quarterback before the combine, but counterpart Bucky Brooks tabbed Allen as the fifth-best option.

Comparison a compliment: Allen has connected with Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who played for Bohl at North Dakota State in 2012 and 2013. He told media members at the combine that Wentz's transition to the NFL is encouraging.

"You see a lot of smaller-school guys go on to the NFL and have success. Carson Wentz, Derek Carr for example. Carson would've been the MVP this past season had he not gotten hurt. The transition from year one to year two was exceptional for him. I was able to talk to him last year.

"I haven't talked to him much this year, but just knowing that we played in the same system, obviously people like to compare me to him, and I look at that as a compliment. He's a fantastic football player, fantastic quarterback, and I take those [compliments] highly that people put me in the same sentence as him, because he's a really good one."
