EAGAN, Minn. — It's not uncommon for players to point out at different parts of the season that every game matters one-sixteenth toward a team's goal.
The scarcity of games in a season means that they all truly do have the potential to affect playoff fates.
With one week left in the regular season, however, this week's home game against Chicago is for more marbles.
The Vikings (8-6-1) will host the Bears (11-4) for a 3:25 p.m. (CT) game that has playoff implications for both teams.
Minnesota has a "win-and-definitely-in" scenario in which a victory secures a postseason berth as one of two Wild Card teams. If Minnesota is unable to do so, it will need a loss or tie by Philadelphia (8-7) at Washington (7-8).
The Bears can still garner the No. 2 seed in the NFC if they finish with the same record as the Rams (12-3). Chicago will be the No. 3 seed if it loses on Sunday.
The four NFC divisions and one of two Wild Card spots have been claimed.
New Orleans took the NFC South and the No. 1 overall seed, meaning the Saints will have home-field advantage in their quest to make it to Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII.
Los Angeles clinched the NFC West long ago, in part by sweeping Seattle, and promptly failed to provide Minnesota with any help by losing to Chicago and Philadelphia in consecutive weeks. The Rams can get the No. 2 seed with a win or a loss by the Bears.
Chicago secured the NFC North, claiming its first division title since 2010. The Bears can get the No. 2 seed with a win and a Rams loss.
Dallas won the NFC East for the third time in five seasons and is the No. 4 seed, regardless of what happens this weekend.
Seattle has secured a trip to the postseason as a Wild Card team. A win would give the Seahawks the No. 5 spot.
