Lunchbreak: Media Pundits Preview Potential Standouts at NFL Scouting Combine

Combine-generic-2560

Any guesses as to who could possibly steal headlines in Indianapolis?

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic on Friday revisited his annual "Freaks List" and reconfigured it to reflect 40 players he's awfully intrigued to see perform in testing and drills at this week's NFL Scouting Combine.

The entire assessment is available here, but don't worry, we'll fill you in on the freakishness of some players so far tied to Minnesota in mock drafts circulating the web – potential future Vikings, if you will.

South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori

Four players, aka freaks, in Feldman's Top 10 have materialized in recent 24th overall pick projections: South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori (No. 1), Texas A&M defensive lineman Shemar Stewart (2), Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant (8) and Alabama edge/linebacker Jihaad Campbell (10).

Emmanwori, according to Feldman, was the best-kept secret in the SEC for a while.

He was No. 11 on the 2024 Freaks List after he put up spectacular numbers last offseason, broad-jumping 11-4, vertical-jumping 42 inches and completing 24 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press in addition to squatting 565 pounds. The former three-star recruit was lights-out again last season, earning first-team All-America honors after leading the team with 88 tackles, to go with four interceptions and three tackles for loss. He turned 21 this month. At 6 feet 3 inches and 220 pounds, he ran, I'm told, a 4.35 in the 40.

Emmanwori had three tackles, and Stewart five, when their teams went head-to-head Nov. 2 last year.

Stewart's former d-line coach at A&M, Sean Spencer, relayed to Feldman that Stewart can fly and anticipates him running a low-4.5 in the 40 (4.62 or 4.63 at worst) at 6-foot-5-plus and 280 pounds.

He managed only [4.5] sacks in 37 games, but his potential is tantalizing, and he was impressive during Senior Bowl week when he showed some refinement in his pass-rush game. In 2024, the Miami native led A&M with seven QB hurries to go with 5.5 TFLs. Expect him to turn a lot of heads when he tests in Indy.

Moving along to the interior of the defensive trenches. …

Feldman pointed out that Grant, who complemented 32 tackles in 2024 with 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, three quarterback hurries and five passes broken up, had a 29-inch vertical jump last offseason.

The former unheralded recruit from Indiana began wowing the UM staff almost from the moment he set foot on campus, causing Jim Harbaugh to rave about the then-360-pounder running a sub-5.0 40. Grant, No. 3 on our Freaks List in 2024, has been clocked at 18.75 mph on the GPS while weighing 350 pounds.

On Campbell, Feldman reminds that he's just 20 years old and was the best player on the Tide defense in 2024, racking up 117 tackles, along with a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. Feldman noted that Campbell is expected to run the 40 in the 4.4s, at 6-3, 245, and he "should excel in everything else."

Other notables on Feldman's list include Minnesota teammates Aireontae Ersery (No. 13) and Cody Lindenberg (31). Ersery, 6-5 and 339 pounds, clocked a 1.52-second 10-yard split — a Golden Gophers offensive line record — and reached 18.34 mph on the GPS last offseason, while Lindenberg recorded a 4.00 pro shuttle time; the last linebacker with as fast of a time at the Combine was David Long in 2019.

Campbell, Emmanwori and Grant also were part of the Scouting Combine preview shared Monday by The Athletic's Dane Brugler, detailing 16 prospects with interesting profiles and "the most to prove."

AI compiles list of Vikings draft targets

There's no replacing the legwork done by NFL scouts.

They watch tens of thousands of plays, break down and grade hundreds of prospects and help fuel franchise decision-makers with the insights they need to identify players best suited to join their team.

Scouts are an invaluable part of the championship-winning formula.

Joe Nelson of Minnesota Vikings on SI, however, documented an exercise in which he "instructed Elon Musk's Grok 3 artificial intelligence to act as an NFL scout with a 180 IQ who is tasked with identifying 10 players at the scouting combine who fit the Minnesota Vikings' biggest needs ahead of the 2025 season."

When Nelson asked for clarification, Grok informed that it decided its list by evaluating Minnesota's roster and determining the Vikings had to nail down a starter with their first-rounder (24th overall).

Here's the catalog of players settled on by Grok, accompanied by supplemental info on half of them:

1. Tyler Booker, IOL, Alabama

Booker gave up a single sack over 849 pass-blocking snaps in his career, according to Pro Football Focus.

2. Donovan Jackson, IOL, Ohio State

Jackson played 634 snaps on the left side of the offensive line in 2024 – 348 at tackle and 286 at guard.

5. Omarion Hampton, RB, North Carolina

Hampton ranked third in the FBS in 2024, per PFF, with 45 rushes gaining 10 or more yards, behind Ashton Jeanty (55) and R.J. Harvey (54). Hampton tied for fourth with 26 breakaway carries (15-plus).

7. Jahdae Barron, CB, Texas

Barron posted the second-best coverage grade in 2024 by a FBS cornerback (91.3) per PFF.

8. Maxwell Hairston, CB, Kentucky

9. Kenneth Grant, DT, Michigan

10. Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon

Harmon led FBS interior DL with 49 pressures in 2024, according to PFF – 10 more than the No. 2 player.

Top 50 prospects 2.0

Former NFL scout and well-respected NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah revealed the second iteration of his Top 50 players for the 2025 NFL Draft on Monday. Here are several notable takeaways:

  • The Top 10 didn't budge, with Penn State edge Abdul Carter leading the way
  • Colorado QB Shadeur Sanders was the first to fall, dropping from 11th to 15th
  • Hampton and Marshall edge Mike Green jumped 10 and six spots, respectively, into the Top 20
  • North Dakota State IOL Grey Zabel made the biggest leap overall (19 spots) to No. 29
  • Four players fell out of Jeremiah's Top 50 all together – South Carolina DT T.J. Sanders (formerly No. 42), Michigan edge Josiah Stewart (46), Purdue OL Marcus Mbow (47) and Texas DT Alfred Collins (50) – and four newcomers emerged: East Carolina CB Shavon Revel, Jr. (No. 46), Iowa RB Kaleb Johnson (47), William & Mary OT Charles Grant (49) and Toledo DT Darius Alexander (50)
  • Ohio State edge Jack Sawyer suffered the largest descent, lowering eight places to 48
