NFC Playoff Picture: Vikings Hold Slim Hopes After 2 Straight Losses

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings playoff hopes are hanging by a thread after losing back-to-back NFC games in Weeks 14 and 15.

Minnesota stumbled in Tampa Bay before falling at home to Chicago on Sunday. And with two games left, the Vikings need multiple things to break their way in order to make the playoffs.

Here's how that would work:

1. Minnesota wins its remaining games at New Orleans and Detroit

2. Arizona loses to San Francisco and the Los Angeles Rams

3. The Bears lose one of their final two games

If all of that happens, the Vikings will claim the No. 7 seed as the NFC's final Wild Card spot.

A reminder that there are seven postseason berths in each conference this year for the first time, and that only the No. 1 seed gets a first-round bye.

Four NFC teams were eliminated in Week 15, including the defending conference champion 49ers that are guaranteed to finish fourth in the NFC West. Detroit, Atlanta and Carolina also have been eliminated.

Here's the look at the NFC playoff picture — with standings, remaining schedules, win percentages of upcoming opponents and a status update — as we head into Week 16.

1. Green Bay Packers (11-3)

12/27 TEN (10-4)

01/03 @CHI (7-7)

Remaining foes' combined records: 17-11

Opponents' win percentage: .607

Status: Green Bay stayed atop the NFC with its win Saturday over Carolina. Now, the Packers will be rooting for the Vikings to beat the Saints. If that happens and the Packers win and the Seahawks lose, Green Bay would clinch the top seed and the only first-round bye.

2. New Orleans (10-4)

12/25 MIN (6-8)

01/03 @CAR (4-10)

Remaining foes' combined records: 10-18

Opponents' win percentage: .357

Status: New Orleans has now dropped two straight games, and its lead in the NFC South is down to one game. The Saints can still clinch the division with a win Friday over the Vikings. And you can be sure New Orleans will want to dish out some revenge after the recent playoff history between these two teams.

3. Seattle Seahawks (10-4)

12/27 LAR (9-5)

01/03 @SF (5-9)

Remaining foes' combined records: 14-14

Opponents' win percentage: .500

Status: The Seahawks are back in front in the NFC West, and can clinch the division with a win over the Rams in Week 16. Seattle lost the Week 9 meeting against Los Angeles. The Seahawks are looking for their first NFC West crown since 2016.

4. Washington Football Team (6-8)

12/27 CAR (4-10)

01/03 @PHI (4-9-1)

Remaining foes' combined records: 8-19-1

Opponents' win percentage: .304

Status: Washington saw its four-game win streak end Sunday with a hard-fought loss to Seattle, but Ron Rivera's team still controls its own destiny. If W16ashington wins out, it will win the NFC East.

5. Los Angeles Rams (9-5)

12/27 @SEA (9-5)

01/03 AZ (7-7)

Remaining foes' combined records: 16-12

Opponents' win percentage: .571

Status: The Rams shocked the league Sunday — but not in a good way — with a 23-20 home loss to the previously winless New York Jets. Los Angeles can jump back into first place with a win Sunday over Seattle, while a loss means the Rams are a Wild Card team at best.

6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-5)

12/26 @DET (5-9)

01/03 ATL (4-10)

Remaining foes' combined records: 9-19

Opponents' win percentage: .321

Status: The Buccaneers made things interesting in Sunday's 31-27 win over the Falcons by rallying from a 17-point deficit. Tampa Bay still has hopes for an NFC South title, but the Bucs need to win out and have New Orleans lose out in order for that to happen.

7. Arizona Cardinals (7-7)

12/26 SF (5-9)

01/03 @LAR (9-5)

Remaining foes' combined records: 14-14

Opponents' win percentage: .500

Status: The Cardinals kept their status as the final Wild Card spot with Sunday's home win over the Eagles. Arizona can inch toward a playoff spot with a win Saturday against San Francisco. The Cardinals will be in the postseason if they win out.

8. Chicago Bears (7-7)

12/27 @JAX (1-13)

01/03 GB (11-3)

Remaining foes' combined records: 12-16

Opponents' win percentage: .429

Status: Chicago has won two straight to stay in the playoff hunt. The Bears all but eliminated the Vikings on Sunday by rushing for a season-high 199 yards, with 146 of those coming from running back David Montgomery. Chicago will now see a team that will have the No. 1 overall pick if it finishes with the same record or worse as the Jets, followed by a team that could have the NFC's No. 1 seed locked up by Week 17.

9. Minnesota Vikings (6-8)

12/25 @NO (10-4)

01/03 @DET (5-9)

Remaining foes' combined records: 15-13

Opponents' win percentage: .536

Status: The Vikings aren't officially out of it, but their playoff probability is in the single digits after Sunday's home loss to the Bears. Minnesota's path to the postseason was covered above. But in order to do their part with back-to-back wins, the Vikings will need to play better in all areas than they did in Week 15.

10. Detroit Lions (5-9)

12/26 TB (9-5)

01/03 MIN (6-8)

Remaining foes' combined records: 15-13

Opponents' win percentage: .536

Status: The Lions have been eliminated from playoff contention.

11. Dallas Cowboys (5-9)

12/27 PHI (4-9-1)

01/03 @NYG (5-9)

Remaining foes' combined records: 9-18-1

Opponents' win percentage: .339

Status: The Cowboys are still alive for the NFC East title after Sunday's win over the 49ers. Dallas needs to win out and have Washington lose out in order for the Cowboys to get into the playoffs.

12. San Francisco 49ers (5-9)

12/26 @AZ (7-7)

01/03 SEA (10-4)

Remaining foes' combined records: 17-11

Opponents' win percentage: .607

Status: The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention.

13. New York Giants (5-9)

12/27 @BAL (9-5)

01/03 DAL (5-9)

Remaining foes' combined records: 14-14

Opponents' win percentage: .500

Status: The Giants are in if both they and the Eagles win out, the Cowboys lose out and Washington loses one of its two final games. Philadelphia and Washington play in Week 17.

14. Philadelphia Eagles (4-9-1)

12/27 @DAL (5-9)

01/03 WAS (6-8)

Remaining foes' combined records: 11-17

Opponents' win percentage: .393

Status: The Eagles are in the playoffs if they win out, Washington loses out and the Giants lose in Week 16 before tying the Cowboys in Week 17.

15. Atlanta Falcons (4-10)

12/27 @KC (13-1)

01/03 @TB (9-5)

Remaining foes' combined records: 22-6

Opponents' win percentage: .786

Status: The Falcons have been eliminated from playoff contention.

16. Carolina Panthers (4-10)

12/27 @WAS (6-8)

01/03 NO (10-4)

Remaining foes' combined records: 16-12

Opponents' win percentage: .571

Status: The Panthers have been eliminated from playoff contention.
