Having been born and raised in Minnesota, several letters especially caught my attention as I rifled through the pile of correspondence written to Hall of Fame Head Coach Bud Grant.
The envelope from Herb Brooks immediately piqued my interest. I first researched Brooks years ago after seeing the Disney film Miracle – and have since learned even more about him thanks to my hockey-loving friend and roommate, Bethany. Reading the words sent by one icon to another didn't disappoint.
Fantastic, vintage Minnesota Twins letterhead drew my eyes to the top of a message typed by longtime Minnesota reporter and broadcaster Halsey Hall. His words introduced me to an incredible backstory between two men who reached first-name fame.
The iconic gold "M" of the Minnesota Gophers, and two letters sent from Minnesota political figures upon Grant's "first" retirement in 1984, guided me through additional chapters of history.
