EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings and Head Coach Kevin O’Connell have agreed to a multiyear contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

"Kevin is exactly who we believed him to be when we named him as our head coach – an innovative play caller, an excellent communicator and a strong leader who motivates and connects with his players," Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf said. "He has helped establish a culture that positions us for sustained success, and he will continue to set the standard we need as we pursue a championship for Vikings fans."

Vikings Owner/Chairman Zygi Wilf added the following:

"There is no question this team is on the right trajectory under Kevin's continued leadership. His authenticity, passion and positive energy, along with his impressive understanding of the game, has helped lead to the success we've experienced over the past three years and will be foundational blocks on which to build moving forward."

O'Connell said "it is an absolute honor to continue leading the Minnesota Vikings."

"Holding this prestigious position is something I never take for granted, and I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Wilf family for their unwavering belief in what we are building together. I also want to thank Leah and our incredible children; their love and support allow me to perform this job at a high level," O'Connell said. "And none of this would be possible without the dedication of our coaches, players and support staff. I can't wait to get back to work with all of them as we continue to build upon the high standard we've set and the positive environment we've created.

"To Vikings fans, you are the best in the NFL," O'Connell added. "There is no greater joy than leading our team in front of you each Sunday and experiencing the home-field advantage you create. I'm thrilled for the years ahead."

The terms of the agreement were not announced by the team.

The news occurs just five days after O'Connell was asked directly at his season-ending press conference if he wanted to sign a contract extension with Minnesota.

"I do. I do," O'Connell responded, before elaborating that he had "great dialogue" with Vikings Ownership in reflecting on his third season in which Minnesota went 14-3 but fell in the Wild Card Round of the NFC Playoffs.

"What I would say is I love being the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, and with that becomes the fact that I love our Ownership," O'Connell said last week. "I have a great relationship with our Ownership and feel so fortunate, not only with just the way they support us and believe in us, but also the impact they have on our players, on our locker room and, ultimately, where we all want to go together. I feel very, very great about that."

O'Connell, who will turn 40 in May, became the first coach in the franchise's 64 seasons to post multiple 13-win seasons, and the 14 racked up in 2024 rank second for any Vikings season all-time.

The team's success, which included a win streak of five games to open the season and one of nine consecutive victories, resulted from building up a bevy of free agents and blending them into a collective team, helping multiple players post personal career bests on offense and defense.

He became the first head coach in NFL history (since at least 1950) to record 14 victories with a QB in his first season with the team and just the fifth with multiple 13-win seasons in his first three with a team.

O'Connell and George Seifert are the only two coaches (since at least 1950) with multiple 13-win seasons in a three-year span with different starting QBs. O'Connell has done so with Kirk Cousins (13-4 in 2022) and Sam Darnold (14-3 in 2024). Seifert did so with Pro Football Hall of Fame QBs Joe Montana in 1990 and Steve Young in 1992.

In Week 13 against Arizona, O'Connell won his 30th career game, reaching the threshold in a franchise-record 46 contests and edging out Vikings Ring of Honor member Dennis Green (48 games). O'Connell stayed calm as Minnesota executed a comeback victory and lead for the first time with 1:13 remaining in the game.

It was the first of three one-score victories by Minnesota during its 5-0 December. The Vikings went 9-1 in one-possession games in 2024, bringing O'Connell's record to 26-9 in such contests for a win percentage of .743 that is ahead of Hall of Famer John Madden (.732, 103-32-7 from 1969-78) for second and only trails Gold Jacket Guy Chamberlin (.759, 22-7-7 from 1922-27).

Minnesota's 14 victories in 2024 more than doubled the oddsmakers' projected win total of 6.5, earning O'Connell placement in conversations for Coach of the Year awards.
