EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Thursday announced they have re-signed cornerback Tye Smith.
In order to add Smith to the roster and remain at the current NFL maximum of 80 players, Minnesota released punter Jordan Berry.
Smith spent 2021 on the Vikings practice squad and was elevated for five games last season. He played 17 snaps on defense and 40 on special teams, totaling six tackles last season. Originally a fifth-round pick by Seattle in 2015, Smith has appeared in 45 NFL games with seven starts.
The Vikings released Smith on Aug. 16 when they had to reduce their roster from the offseason max of 90 players to 85.

Berry joined Minnesota last September and played all 17 games for the Vikings in 2021, grossing a career-best 46.5 yards per punt.
The Vikings opened a competition this offseason between the former Pittsburgh Steeler (2015-20) and undrafted rookie free agent Ryan Wright, who played collegiately at Tulane.
Additionally, the Vikings reached an injury settlement with undrafted rookie defensive lineman Tyarise Stevenson, who played in Minnesota's preseason opener at Las Vegas but was waived with an injury designation on Aug. 16.
Minnesota is scheduled to close its preseason at 8 p.m. (CT) Saturday in Denver.
