EAGAN, Minn. — Lookin' sharp there, Hitman.
An audible appreciation for — and maybe a hint of surprise at — Harrison Smith's 'fit echoed through TCO Studios when the veteran safety arrived to sign his restructured contract deal.
Don't get us wrong: Smith can snazzy it up with the best of them and consistently is among game days' best dressed Vikings. But it's also fair to say Friday's black suit-and-tie combo contrasted with past instances of pen to paper.
Turns out, Vikings Executive Vice President of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski was the motivator.
"Rob kind of roasted me for my outfit [last year]," Smith quipped, "which is why I'm wearing a suit today."
When Smith arrived to the same TCO Studios a year ago, having opted to return to the Vikings for a 13th season, he wore a white crewneck sweatshirt and cream-colored baseball cap.
"I had been at Dollywood with my family," he explained. "I didn't realize I had to come back [to Minnesota]. I guess I hadn't really done it before where I [had become] a free agent, so I had to come back for the physical.
"I think I left Dollywood and drove to the airport and came right here and wasn't exactly ready for it," Smith added with a laugh.
While he may not have been on top of logistics last year, he absolutely was confident about coming for another campaign in Purple. This time around for Season No. 14, he explained why he's just as certain.

"It starts with the leadership of this organization," Smith said. "From Ownership with the Wilfs, and obviously with [Head Coach] Kevin O'Connell and being able to play for him the last couple years, and being able to build this team the right way; and the culture, just knowing what we have here and what we're capable of — what I believe we're capable of — it was important for me to come back and chase something this year."
During Smith's contract signing, he was taken down memory lane by being shown a series of photos. He quickly realized they were a collection of photos from days he had signed his first Vikings contract in 2012 and new ones with 2016, 2021 and 2024.
"Is this all the signings I've done?" he asked with a laugh.
As he reflected, he thought about the relationships with people in the organization and fans who have supported him for so long.
"Days like that, the spotlight might be on me, but it's pretty cool to be in an organization this long and create the relationships that come with that, and they're real. They're not things that fans see often, but they're significant parts of our lives as players."
