EAGAN, Minn. — It happened in three waves, but New Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell has completed the hiring of assistants for his first season in Minnesota.
The Vikings on Tuesday announced the additions of Greg Manusky (Inside Linebackers), Tony Sorrentino (Assistant Wide Receivers), A'Lique Terry (Assistant Defensive Line), Steve Donatell (Quality Control — Defense), Derron Montgomery (Quality Control — Offense) and Ryan Cordell (Pass Game Specialist/Game Management Coordinator).
Manusky, who played linebacker for the Vikings from 1991-93, will join forces with Outside Linebackers Coach/Pass Rush Specialist Mike Smith, who was previously announced.
Sorrentino's previous career stops include two seasons at the University of Minnesota.
Here is more on each of the six newest additions to the coaching staff (listed below in alphabetical order by last name).
Pass Game Specialist/Game Management Coordinator Ryan Cordell
Cordell's NFL Experience
49ers 2014 (Salary Cap Intern); 2015 (Offensive Asst.); 2016 (Football Operations Coordinator); 2017-18 (Special Asst. to the General Manager)
Browns 2019 (Football Research Analyst); 2020-21 (Coaching Asst.)
Intriguing role: This is an interesting position that previously did not exist (at least officially) in Minnesota. It's potentially well-timed, given the Vikings struggles at the end of halves in 2021. Cordell has ties to O'Connell (2016 in San Francisco) and General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah (with the 49ers and Browns).
Quality Control — Defense Steve Donatell
Donatell's Coaching Experience
Tennessee-Chattanooga 2018 (Outside Linebackers)
Stanford 2019-20 (Defensive Quality Control)
Former linebacker turned tight end: Donatell is one of Vikings Defensive Coordinator Ed Donatell's sons. He played linebacker at Wake Forest and was a team captain and academic All-ACC selection in 2015 before transferring to Western Kentucky as a graduate and switching to tight end. The Seahawks signed Donatell after he participated as a tryout player during the Seahawks rookie minicamp in 2017. He did not appear in an NFL game.
Quality Control — Offense Derron Montgomery
Abilene Christian 2010-12 (Student Asst. Coach)
University of Miami 2012-13 (Intern Coaching Asst.); 2013-14 (Asst. Wide Receivers)
Michigan 2015 (Receivers)
New Mexico Highlands 2016 (Offensive Coordinator)
Abilene Christian 2016-17 (Fullbacks/Tight Ends)
Georgia 2018-20 (Asst. Director of Player Development)
Arizona 2021 (Senior Offensive Analyst)
Following in footsteps: Montgomery played receiver at Iowa State before transferring to Abilene Christian. His father, Wilbert, also played at Abilene Christian and ranks second in Philadelphia Eagles history with 6,538 rushing yards after playing with the club from 1977-84. Wilbert was an assistant coach with four NFL teams from 1997-2015.
Inside Linebackers Greg Manusky
Manusky's Career as an NFL Player
Commanders 1988-90
Vikings 1991-93
Chiefs 1994-99
Manusky's NFL/College Coaching Experience
Commanders 2001 (Linebackers)
Chargers 2002-06 (Linebackers)
49ers 2007-10 (Defensive Coordinator)
Chargers 2011 (Defensive Coordinator)
Colts 2012-15 (Defensive Coordinator)
Commanders 2016 (Outside Linebackers); 2017-19 (Defensive Coordinator)
Kentucky 2020-21 (Defensive Quality Control)
Double overlap: In addition to overlapping with O'Connell in Washington, Manusky was in Indianapolis with former Colts GM Ryan Grigson, who was hired by Minnesota in early February.
Assistant Wide Receivers — Tony Sorrentino
Sorrentino's Coaching Experience
Morristown Beard High School (N.J.) 2005 (Wide Receivers/Defensive backs/Long Snappers)
West Essex High School (N.J.) 2006 (Wide Receivers/Defensive backs/Long Snappers)
The College of New Jersey 2007 (Linebackers)
Montville Township High School (N.J.) 2008 (Tight Ends/Defensive Ends/Kickers)
University of Minnesota 2009 (Offensive Quality Control); 2010 (Quarterbacks)
University of Miami 2011 (Offensive Graduate Asst.)
The College of New Jersey 2012 (Quarterbacks/Passing Game Coordinator)
Jaguars 2013-15 (Asst. Wide Receivers/Quality Control); 2016 (Asst. Wide Receivers)
University of Tennessee 2017 (Wide Receivers Analyst)
Florida Atlantic 2018 (Director of Football Operations)
Northern Illinois 2019 (Tight Ends/Fullbacks); 2020-21 (Wide Receivers)
Swapping notes: Sorrentino will join Keenan McCardell in the Vikings receivers room. McCardell coached Jacksonville Jaguars receivers from 2017-20, so both men could swap stories from previously coaching several of the same players, including Allen Robinson II, Allen Hurns and Marqise Lee.
Asst. Defensive Line A'Lique Terry
Wake Forest 2018 (Quality Control — Offensive Line & Running Backs)
Oregon 2019-20 (Graduate Asst.)
Hawai'i 2021 (Offensive Line)
Offense to defense: Terry played four seasons on the offensive line at Wake Forest, helping the Demon Deacons reach a pair of bowl games before graduating in 2018.
