View travel images from Saturday as the Vikings flew to Detroit in advance of Sunday's game vs. the Lions.
3:02 PM - After running three straight times to bleed the clock and force the Lions to use their remaining timeouts, the Vikings attempted to take a safety with with less than a minute remaining by having P Jeff Locke run out of the end zone. However, there was a penalty on the play, so the Lions were awarded the two points via the holding call.
So, with a 28-19 lead, Locke used the free kick to send the ball back to the Lions. Detroit's offense took over with :52 left, and completed a few passes but the clock ran out, leading to a Vikings victory.
2:55 PM - The Vikings defense stood tall near the end of the game, stopping the Lions four times in a row inside their own 10-yard-line to keep the lead at 28-17 and will now look to run the clock out.
2:19 PM –Blair Walsh is 5 of 5 for the day.
His latest FG came after yet another stalled red zone drive. The Vikings will have to fix their red zone issues at some point, but for now Walsh has helped increase the lead to 28-17 early in the 4th quarter.
Detroit will start 1st and 10 from their 20 after yet another touchback by Walsh.
2:01 PM –The Vikings scored, but the Lions dodged a bullet.
Adrian Peterson ripped off a 75-yard run to the Detroit 3. The Vikings couldn't punch it in from there, though, so Blair Walsh had to come on to salvage yet another red zone drive that stalled. The Walsh FG increased the Vikings lead to 25-17.
The missed PAT earlier in the game and the Vikings continued woes in the red zone loom large right now with the Vikings leading by 8 points midway through the 3rd quarter.
1:56 PM –Stefon Diggs. Wow.
The catch of the year has been registered and it has been registered in this game by Diggs.
Sprinting down the left side of the field, Diggs completely laid out to haul in a Teddy Bridgewater offering. Diggs caught the ball and came down with it in the end zone to complete a 36-yard play that will be seen all over highlight shows tonight.
After closing the first half with a FG, the Vikings parlayed that with the Diggs score on the first possession of the second half to take a 22-17 lead.
The Vikings defense forced a three-and-out of Detroit's offense on the ensuing possession, and now Bridgewater and Co. are back on the field.
1:16 PM –Blair Walsh had salvaged two previous drives but this time he couldn't finish one.
The good news is a Teddy Bridgewater-to-Kyle Rudolph connection occurred and it occurred in the end zone. That moved the Vikings to within five points at 17-12. Walsh missed the PAT, so the deficit remains five points.
With 1:49 to go, the Lions will try to mount a late-half drive to score more points before halftime. The Vikings will receive the opening kickoff of the second half.
12:49 PM –More of the same, as the Vikings get into opponent territory but have to settle for a FG.
Blair Walsh came on to salvage a score, and needed to hit a 53-yarder to do so after a sack of Teddy Bridgewater on 3rd down.
Midway through the 2nd quarter, the Vikings trail 14-6.
12:38 PM –More of the same on the Lions second offensive possession.
Using another long passing play – this one a 55-yarder to TE Eric Ebron – the Lions drove quickly and explosively on the Vikings to score another TD. It was Ebron who scored it.
The PAT was good and the Lions lead 14-3 with 1:24 to go in the 1st quarter.
12:26 PM –The Vikings have answered, but they still trail.
Using a lot of Adrian and a couple big completions to Mike Wallace, the Vikings drove 63 yards in 15 plays to set up Blair Walsh for a 37-yard FG.
With 3:47 to play in the opening quarter, the Vikings trail 7-3.
12:15 PM –The Vikings wanted to start fast, but it's the Lions who are quick out of the gates.
Matthew Stafford found Calvin Johnson twice on the opening drive – for 46 yards on the first 3rd down of the game and then for a 1-yard TD to cap the drive.
The Lions lead 7-0 early in the 1st quarter.
11:55 AM –Start fast.
No team doesn't want to start fast. That the Vikings want to start fast today against Detroit isn't a news story, but it does bear mentioning before the game today because head coach Mike Zimmer (multiple times) and QB Teddy Bridgewater have both mentioned starting fast while speaking publicly about playing Detroit.
Aside from executing well, how does a team emphasize starting fast? One way a team can do it, especially on the road, is to use some no huddle from time to time. Will that happen today? It's possible. Whether the Vikings use no huddle or not, though, a key to starting fast will be converting on 3rd down early in the game to extend drives and put points up on the board early.
