Draft Snapshot: 10 Defensive Tackles to Watch

The 2018 NFL Draft is just around the corner.

One of the league's most important events kicks off with the first round at 7 p.m. (CT) on April 26 in Dallas at AT&T Stadium. The second and third rounds will be held on April 27 and begin at 6 p.m. (CT). Round 4 will start at 11 a.m. (CT) on April 28 and be followed by Rounds 5-7.

The Vikings currently have eight selections in the draft, beginning with the 30th overall pick. Minnesota went 13-3 in 2017 and reached the NFC title game.

Vikings.com is taking a glance at the top prospects at each position leading up to the draft.

Where the Vikings Stand

The Vikings have one of the league's best defensive players in the trenches in Linval Joseph, as the mammoth defensive tackle has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons. But Minnesota added another big name this offseason when they signed free agent Sheldon Richardson, who has 19 sacks in 73 career games. Second-year lineman Jaleel Johnson could see an increased role this season. Dylan Bradley and Caushaud Lyons are also on the roster.

Recent Draft History (over past five years)

Total number of defensive tackles taken: 94

Round 1: 12

Round 2: 13

Round 3: 19

Round 4: 15

Round 5: 9

Round 6: 16

Round 7: 10

The trend has shown that defensive tackles are always going to be picked often throughout the draft. Teams could go for an impact player like Richardson, who was the first defensive tackle taken in 2013 with the 13th overall pick. Or they could try and find depth with a mid-round talent such as Johnson, who was a fourth-round pick in 2017. Teams could also take a flier on a Day 3 player with the hopes they turn into a solid contributor with a bit of grooming.
