EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings have added to their defensive backs room again.

Minnesota on Monday signed defensive back Bobby McCain after he worked out Sunday, a day off for players at Vikings Training Camp.

To make room for McCain, Minnesota waived kicker John Parker Romo, who had joined the team during free agency before the Vikings drafted kicker Will Reichard.

McCain brings considerable experience to the Vikings, having started 87 of the 131 regular-season games he's played in the NFL with Miami, Washington and the New York Giants.

After playing college football at Memphis, McCain first entered the NFL in 2015 as a fifth-round pick by the Dolphins.

He played there through the 2020 season, overlapping with Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores, who was Miami's head coach from 2019-21, for two seasons.

McCain started 55 of 87 games for the Dolphins, totaling 254 tackles, nine tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, 4.0 sacks, 30 passes defensed and seven interceptions.

From 2021-22, McCain started 32 of 34 games for Washington and totaled 139 tackles, three tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, 14 passes defensed and four interceptions.

McCain appeared in 10 games, primarily on special teams, for the Giants in 2023.

The addition of McCain follows the opening week of training camp in which cornerback Mekhi Blackmon suffered a torn ACL on July 24, the first team practice. Veteran Shaq Griffin is dealing with a soft tissue injury in his left leg, which he suffered on July 25.

Minnesota also is mourning the loss of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson, who passed away during a July 6 automobile accident. Jackson's funeral was held July 26 in Maryland.

The Vikings already had signed cornerbacks Duke Shelley and Jacobi Francis since the start of camp.
