Fans, once you’re done reading “Inside the Helmet” with Jayme Mitchell, be sure to check the Vikings Blog to stay on top of all the Alltel Vikings Training Camp action.
When the Vikings acquired Jared Allen this past offseason and added the 2007 NFL sack leader to a defensive line that already included Kevin and Pat Williams, common thought suggested the main benefactor would be right defensive end Ray Edwards. So far during training camp, it’s actually been Jayme Mitchell.
Edwards, who had a great training camp last year and was a mainstay during offseason training at Winter Park, landed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list when camp began with a lingering back issue. The injury had been characterized by both Edwards and Vikings coaches as minor, and the third-year pro returned to the practice field Wednesday morning for the first time during camp.
In Edwards’ stead, the 6-6, 285-pound Mitchell stepped in with the first-team defense. Mitchell was acquired by the Vikings in 2006 as an undrafted rookie free agent and he has worked his way into a more prominent role each season. He spent two games on the Vikings practice squad in 2006 and played in 13 contests. In 2007 he played in ten games, but tallied 13 tackles, six quarterback hurries and one sack in a five-game span late in the season.
As an undrafted rookie in 2006 who seems poised to have his best season in 2008, Mitchell’s NFL story is one based on hard work and determination.
“I think it’s my work ethic, just working hard every day,” Mitchell said of being the one chosen to take first-team reps in place of Edwards. “I empty the cup every day and try to get better every day. I think it takes dedication and commitment to make this team and I want to make this team better.”
His teammates notice that same work ethic paying off for Mitchell during this training camp.
“He is playing solid football,” linebacker Chad Greenway said. “Everyone knows about his pass-rushing skills, but his work ethic is really showing right now and he’s showing that he belongs in the rotation. He looks really good out here.”
Working exclusively at right defensive end, Mitchell is responsible for rushing the passer and remaining stout against the run. He currently occupies the spot Kenechi Udeze had nailed down and the one Edwards will likely step into once he is fully recovered. But if Mitchell keeps playing well during camp, the Vikings coaches will have a hard time taking first-team reps away from him.
“I feel like I’m having a pretty good camp,” Mitchell says. “I just have to keep pressing and keep getting stronger and stronger every day.”
I have a better understanding of the game now and I know the routine. I’ve learned more about the game since I’ve been here with the Vikings.
Being out here every day competing against Ryan Cook and Marcus Johnson and all the other right tackles is making me a better all-around player.
